Annapurna Sanctuary Trek or the Annapurna Base Camp Trekking
Welcome to the World’s famous short trekking route in the Himalayas-Annapurna Sanctuary Trek (not the Annapurna circuit).
Starting from tourist favorite town from the lakeside of Pokhara, the road heads to Birenthanti, check point and last bus stop at Syauli Bazar, and continues through farmland and lush forests and to narrow gorges overlooked by the mighty Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhru. Another name for Machhapuchhre is Fishtail Mountain.
The Annapurna Base Camp, 4100m, acronym ABC, Trek is a luscious mix of remarkable mountain vistas, thick rhododendron and bamboo forest ecosystems.
It introduces you to a vast variety of birds and wildlife whilst offering you the most magnificent views of the snow-capped mountains of the Annapurna Range. Our destination is ABC where we will be encapsulated by a mountainous wonderland, being surrounded by the icy peaks of some of the world’s highest and most beautiful mountains.
If you are hiking through Poon Hill and Ghorepani, the trail takes you to the heart of the Gurung and Magar cultures and their traditional way of life. This is the trail of the viewpoint of the vast and mighty Himalayas.
(This is full text, to make it short and brief, please edit) Annapurna trekking has been widely recognized as a naturalist’s paradise. The upper sub-alpine steppe environment harbors some of the rare snow leopards and blue sheep. Other areas of the region protect bird species such as the multi-colored Impeyan, kokla, and blood pheasant among a multitude of other birds, butterflies and insects. Many plants native to Nepal are found in this forest. The conservation area has 100 varieties of orchids and some of the richest temperate rhododendron forest in the world.
Annapurna base camp trek is famous for trekkers. The principal peaks of the western portion of the great Annapurna Himal are Hiunchuli, Annapurna South, Fang, Annapurna, Ganagapurna, Annapurna 3 and Machhapuchhare, are arranged almost precisely in a circle about 10 miles in diameter with a deep glacier-covered amphitheater at the center. From this glacier basin, known as the Annapurna Sanctuary, the Modi Khola knifes its way south in a narrow gorge fully 12,000 ft. deep. Further south, the gorge opens up into a wide and fertile valley, the domain of the Gurungs. The middle and upper portions of Modi Khola offer some of the best short trekking routes in Nepal, and the valley is located so that these treks can be easily combined with treks into the Kali Gandaki region to the west.
Poon Hill Excursion
The trail is equally a delight for natural experiences. On the third day of our trekking, we leave our luggage in a hotel at Ghorepani for the Poon Hill excursion before dawn to catch the spectacular sunrise. Poon Hill is one of the best viewpoints in this trek for a sun-rise view and mountain vista. Mount Dhaulagiri, the Annapurna Range and Mount Machhapuchhre to the northern part and the Butterfly Peaks in the far western part are all visible from atop Poon Hill. Finding yourself in the base giant Annapurna I (8091m) with 360-degree Mountain View is terrifically beautiful. It is beyond your imagination that this is an unforgettable lifetime mountain holiday experience in Nepal.
Best Time
October, November and March and May are the best seasons for trekking. June July August monsoon here. March April May is the rhododendron blooming season. As the sun touches the snow-capped summits the Himalayan Giants, (Dhaulagiri 8,167m) and Annapurna (8,091m), among many other peaks, gradually become visible magically before your eyes. This trek offers great opportunities to witness the beauty of the Annapurna region with a limited short time of trekking. If you would like to avoid crowds then it is recommended to trek in winter (December – February). The temperature is cold in the mornings but not unbearable and it is warm during day hikes and clear sky with fantastic views most of the days.
Hot springs
There is a natural hot spring near Jhinu Danda, you can cleanse yourself in natural hot springs with bathing areas in the lap of the mountains. Locals believe that the waters have a healing quality that eases away your aches and pains. But I don’t see many tourists there.
People and Culture
The locals we will encounter in Annapurna Base Camp Route are a mix ethnic groups; there are Brahmans and Chhetris in lower elevations and Mongoloid Himalayan people in Himalaya. Mostly there are Gurung and Magar people in the area, famous for Gurkha regiment. If you would like to explore more cultural and traditional heritages in Himalaya we suggest you trek to Langtang, Manaslu, and Everest region. But no doubt that Annapurna is the best for scenery as some 55000 people trek there every year.
How difficult is Annapurna Base Camp Trek?
Regarding the difficulty of this trek, it is very moderate and doesn’t demand advanced physical fitness levels so anyone can accept the challenge in nature, walking in this trek. Also, those who are traveling with children can also get pleasure from this trek. Trekking Annapurna Base Camp via Ghorepani allows your body to get adapted and acclimatized with high altitude.
