Durbar Squares in Kathmandu
Kathmandu valley has three Durbar Square, Basantapur Durbar Square in Kathmandu, Patan Durbar Square in Patan and Bhaktapur Durbar Square in Bhaktapur. All of these three sites are enlisted in UNESCO World Heritage sites and easy for access in Kathmandu.
Basantapur Durbar Square
Basantapur Durbar Square is one of the three royal palaces in the Kathmandu valley and it is the old royal palace of the Malla and Shah Kings and located in the heart of Kathmandu City. Durbar square consist of many temples and houses which have spectacular arts and eye-catching architecture. As of now, several buildings, including, Kumari Ghar-Living goddess, Royal Palace, Musium, Temples, Houses are in the process of renovation because of the damage done by the Earthquake. Foreground of the Durbar sells relics and traditional items.
Since there are no written archives regarding the Basantapur Durbar, construction of the palace in the square is credited to Shankardev (1069-1083AD), almost one thousand years old. Kathmandu Durbar Square was the Royal palace of The Malla King, 16th Century, The Shah Kings and of the Rana’s Dynasty and has ponds, quadrangles, temples, courtyard and images, all contributed during the three centuries or their rule.
Patan Durbar Square
Patan Durbar Square is a marvel of architecture and believed to be 400 years old, constructed during the reign of Siddhi Narshingh Malla. Patan is one of the oldest Buddhist cities and is the center of both Hindu and Buddhist belief.
Most of the sightseeing spots in Patan Durbar are temples and statues, Krishna.
Bhaktapur Durbar Square
Bhaktapur Durbar Square also known as Khwopa has four distinctive squares, Durbar, Taumadi, Dattatreya and Potters Square is a highly visited Durbar in Nepal. Major attraction of the Durbar square is the 55 window palace, which was built in 1696 by Bhupatindra Malla. The Palace is so huge that it was only completed at the time of his son, Rana Jit. Vatsala temple has Silver bell and when it was rung, vicinity dogs barked, and people call it ‘the bell of barking dogs.’ Statue of Bhupatindra Malla, Nyatpole Temple, Golden gate are other attractions. Golden gate is said to be the most beautiful and richly specimen of its kind in the entire world.
